I’ve had my fair share of upper, lower, and even middle back pain over the years due to countless sporting and gym injuries.

What Causes Back Pain?

I’ll say this upfront:

If you have any sort of acute or chronic back pain then you should go see a qualified medical professional and stop playing amateur doctor with Google.

Why?

Because even though certain conditions can be grouped by symptoms and mapped to possible treatments – your back pain is ultimately unique to you and needs specific attention.

Even the NHS says that the causes of back pain can range from medical conditions such as a slipped disc, sciatica, ankylosing spondylitis (swelling of the joints in the spine), spondylolisthesis (a bone in the spine slipping out of position) to ‘nonspecific back pain’ – where the actual cause cannot be identified [2].

When Should You Seek Immediate Medical Attention?

The NHS recommends that you seek immediate medical attention if your back pain is accompanied by [3]:

  • Numbness or tingling around the buttocks or genitals.
  • Difficulty peeing.
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control.
  • Chest pain.
  • A high temperature of 38C or more.
  • Unexplained weight loss.

  • There’s no improvement when resting.
  • If the pain worsens significantly at night.

What’s the Best Way to Relieve Back Pain?

Again, I recommend that you go and see your doctor to get a specific treatment plan for your bad back.

Especially if the pain has been persistent for some time without improvement, if the pain stops you from performing daily tasks, or if the discomfort suddenly becomes very severe.

But in more general terms, the NHS says that back pain usually gets better on its own within a few weeks or months [4] and in the meantime, they suggest the following activities to help relieve your back pain [5]:

Your sleeping position alone may or may not be enough to cause back pain.

Yes.

Sleeping is a highly personal thing and there’s no hard and fast rules for finding the perfect mattress to prevent or cure back pain.

1: Front and Back Sleepers – Medium or Firmer Mattress

Mattress firmness generally means the level of surface tension and relates to the amount of pressure relief that you may feel.

Mattress support isn’t the same thing – it refers to how the mattress keeps your spine in alignment.

Sleeping on your back is actually considered one of the best sleeping positions to prevent a bad back because it can help to keep your hips and spine correctly aligned.

  • Adopt the fetal position with a pillow between your knees.
  • Put a pillow under your hips if you’re a front sleeper.

  • Strengthen your core muscles under the guidance of a qualified professional.

It could.

A hybrid mattress typically consists of multiple layers made from different materials.

Usually, you’ll find that the top layer is made from something like memory foam, gel, latex, or a combination of these materials – whilst the lower support layers could be made up of innersprings.

Hybrid mattresses are generally a very good option for sleepers of all types that are suffering from back pain because the coil underlayers can provide support for a range of sleeping positions – whilst the top layer can reduce pressure points on key areas like the hips and shoulders.

But I can tell you from personal experience that you must take extra care when picking the right level of firmness and support for your memory foam mattress because when I got this wrong – I actually ended up with back pain.
