The main problem with sleeping on your side is that you could potentially increase the pressure on your shoulders, hips, and back if your mattress is too firm or lacks the right amount of support.
Also the straighter your legs are, the greater the risk of pelvic rotation which could increase the amount of pressure placed on your spine and the surrounding muscles – potentially causing you to wake up feeling like you’ve ‘tweaked’ your back.

But don’t just take my word for it – because this scientific study concluded that the ‘stiffness’ (firmness) of the surface being slept on ‘…can have a significant effect on keeping the spine healthy’ .

As a side sleeper – selecting the right mattress firmness is critical.
And I can personally attest to this having recently spent a rather uncomfortable night on a hotel mattress that was too firm for my side sleeping preferences – causing me to awaken to a dull ache in my left shoulder that lasted all morning and well into the afternoon.
Also, if a mattress is too firm for you, you might experience your hands, arms, legs, or feet going numb – which is really not great for your circulation.

Here’s a few more points to consider.

For example, if you’re under 130 lbs then you might want to consider a medium-soft – or even a plush/soft – firmness because the reduced surface tension will allow you to sink into the mattress a little bit more.

I’ve looked at many different firmness scales and there’s often some discrepancies between brands and even mattress review sites – but a mattress with a rating of around 3 (plush/soft) to 7 (firm) should be suitable depending on your body weight.
Another fancy metric that you might hear when a sales person is trying to sell you a bed is ‘indentation load deflection’ (ILD).
Now, as I said in my ILD guide, I personally think that there are too many variables at play to exclusively use ILD values as a reliable indicator of mattress firmness and ultimately comfort, but the general rule is that as ILD increases – so does the firmness.
And I’m all about making things as simple as possible.
So here’s a table that you can use as a guideline to help you find the right mattress firmness if you’re a side sleeper based on your body weight.

Mattress support and firmness are NOT the same thing.

As I just said, the top layers of the mattress are responsible for the firmness, whilst the lower layers are responsible for the support.

I see a lot of heavier sleepers saying that mattresses that are 12 or even 14 inches thick are more suitable than the 10 and 8 inch alternatives.
More specifically, a comfort (top) layer that’s at least 4-5 inches thick can help stop you from ‘bottoming out’ and touching the support layers below – a phenomenon that could actually make your mattress feel firmer than it really is.
This factor encompasses the two points above.
If you weigh more than 200 lbs, you’ll probably be better off with a thicker mattress that has a high quality innerspring, or high density foam support layer.
Because as a heavier side sleeper, it can be surprisingly easy to have your hips sink too far into the mattress and give you back pain.
3: Consider the Materials
The material and how the layers of the mattress are organised can have a huge impact on how comfortable your bed is.

Because in some cases, you can purchase different mattresses than can be zipped together to act as one unit so that you can both benefit from the differing qualities.
Alternatively, you could buy an adjustable bed base with the ‘split’ option so that you can each customise your sleeping position and get different mattresses too.
But if you do end up sharing the same mattress, then you might want to consider a king sized option for more space, and make sure that it has good motion isolation properties to ensure that you don’t wake each other up during the night as you move around.
Is There Anything Else to Consider?
Ok, so I think I’ve just about covered everything that you need to consider when buying a mattress as a side sleeper.
But here are a few more things that you should keep in mind.
Are you the type of side sleeper that tends to hug the side of your mattress?
Then you’ll need a mattress with good edge support so that you don’t end up rolling out during the night or experiencing that ‘falling out’ feeling when you get too close to the edge.
Memory foam mattresses tend to have the worst edge support generally speaking – whilst innerspring mattresses are often then best.
If an innerspring mattress isn’t right for you then a hybrid bed might be a suitable compromise.
One of the benefits of buying a mattress online is the ‘bed-in-a-box’ feature where your mattress will typically come in a neatly compressed package that can be carried up to your room with relative ease.
One of the biggest worries if you’re buying a mattress online is that it won’t be comfortable enough.
The best option here is to look for a mattress that comes with a sleep trial so that you can return it if needs be.
Some mattresses come with sleep trials that can last up to 100 nights – which is probably a lot better than just lying on the bed for 2 minutes in the store – because it will give you enough time for the mattress to soften to your body weight and shape.
You can expect your mattress to last between 7 – 10 years if you look after it properly.
And whilst you can get mattress warranties that can last 10 or 20 years – it’s actually more important to choose a warranty that provides the most amount of non-prorated coverage.
Because a prorated warranty means that you’ll have to contribute to the cost of replacing the faulty parts.
In many cases, the warranty period will be split between prorated and non-prorated coverage.
Warranties are particularly important when purchasing a memory foam mattress because they are prone to indenting defects – especially if the foam is very cheap or poorly made.
