Because when you buy a high quality 100% mulberry silk bed sheet, you’re getting a sheet that’s strong, durable, super-soft to the touch, naturally hypoallergenic, regulates your temperature year-round, and even has anti-ageing properties due to the sericin protein that helps your skin retain moisture and soften the look of fine lines and wrinkles.

Because silk bed sheets can feel and behave differently depending on the type of silk used, the weave, and the momme weight.

That’s why I’ve put together this list of the 5 best silk bed sheets that you can buy online in 2020 to help you find the right sheet for your specific needs as quickly as possible.

Make sure that you avoid bleach.

Best Overall Mulberry Silk Bed Sheet For Enduring Luxury

Because this bed sheet set is made from 100% mulberry silk and has a superior momme weight of 25, you’re getting the full range of benefits that raw, natural silk has to offer.

2: THXSILK – Best Warming Mulberry Silk Bed Sheet

Not many people know that silk sheets can actually be quite warming when a tighter weave is used – yet they can also wick away moisture to keep you dry too.

This means that if you’re suffering from cold sweats – or simply need to stay warm and dry in cooler weather – then the best silk bed sheet to buy for the job is this 4-piece set from THXSILK.

Because whilst the sheets are made from 100% long stranded 25 momme Mulberry silk to ensure strength, durability, and supreme softness this bed sheet helps to retain body heat to keep you warm too.

Whilst the amino acids found in the raw silk can help your skin and hair stay smooth and soft.

Benefits

  • Made to OEKO-TEX® 100 Certification Standards which means that the material is free from harmful chemicals.
  • Very lightweight and soft.
  • Can help you retain heat and stay warm in cooler weather.
  • Able to wick away moisture to help you stay dry.
  • Made from top grade 25 momme mulberry silk for an incredibly durable sheet.
  • Naturally anti-ageing because of the amino acids that help your skin to stay moisturised.
  • Helps your hair stay soft because the material encourages the retention of natural oils.
  • Can be machine washed.

Cons

  • May be too warm in summer if you are a temperate or warm sleeper.

Washing Guidelines

The manufacturer recommends that you hand wash your sheet set, but machine washing is also possible – use cold water on a gentle cycle, hang-dry, and iron on cool.

Avoid bleach.

Best For Cooler Sleepers and Cold Sweats

Whilst many silk bed sheet manufacturers and review sites generically blurt out that all silk bed sheets regulate your temperature year round naturally – this isn’t always true.

Because whilst mulberry silk is able to regulate your temperature naturally – some silk sheets are actually warming because of their tighter weave and heavier momme weight.

So if you tend to sleep cold or cool – even in the summer – or suffer from cold sweats due to a condition like idiopathic hyperhidrosis, then this is the best warming silk bed sheet set to buy in my opinion.

Because not only will the sheets help you retain heat better to warm you up, the material does a great job at wicking away excess moisture to help you stay dry too.

3: THXSILK – Best Hypoallergenic Silk Bed Sheet Set

If you’re looking for a more affordable hypoallergenic silk bed sheet to help with your allergies then I highly recommend taking a look at this 4 piece sheet set.

Because the manufacturer states that this 19 momme, 100% top grade mulberry silk bed sheet is not only naturally hypoallergenic and made to OEKO-TEX® 100 Certification Standards to minimise skin irritation – it can also help ‘eliminate’ allergies and asthma.

I believe this to be true because unlike some other fabrics, raw silk is naturally resistant to allergens found in the air such as pollen and dust that can become embedded in the sheets and cause flare ups.

Also, silk sheets are better at guarding against dust mites and mold growth to limit irritation of your airways and prevent the worsening of your asthma.

Benefits

  • Naturally hypoallergenic to limit allergic reactions.
  • Made to OEKO-TEX® 100 Certification Standards which means that the material is free from harmful chemicals.
  • Designed to help regulate your temperature in both warm and cool temperatures.
  • Contains amino acids that can help your skin and hair retain moisture to increase softness.

Cons

  • Take care when washing.

Washing Guidelines

The manufacturer recommends that you wash your sheet set by hand, but machine washing is also possible – use a gentle or special silk detergent in lukewarm water at no more than 30 degrees C.

It’s best to hang-dry these sheets out of direct sunlight – although you can also tumble dry on cool for a short amount of time.

Iron on the inside when slightly damp using a cool setting.

Best For Allergies and Sensitive Skin

I think this is the best silk bed sheet set for allergy prevention and minimising skin irritation.

Because the material is naturally hypoallergenic, is very soft, and is designed for asthma and allergy relief.

And an added bonus is that the material has been woven and constructed to be both breathable and absorbent – helping you to sleep at the ideal temperature and stay dry all night all year round.

4: THXSILK – Best Moisture Wicking Silk Bed Sheet Set

As I said earlier, you need to be very careful when buying silk bed sheets because when a tighter weave or synthetic satin is used – they can actually warm you up.

This is fine if you’re a cooler sleeper or suffer from cold sweats but the vast majority of folks want a sheet that can help them sleep comfortably in both the summer and winter.

That’s why I’ve picked out this 4-piece set as the best silk bed sheet for both hot and cold sleepers.

Because the fabric uses a 22 momme weight and a charmeuse weave to balance breathability with heat retention relative to your body temperature – whilst the naturally absorbent properties of silk will help you to stay dry too.

Benefits

  • Suitable for both hot and cold sleepers.
  • Wicks away moisture to help you stay dry.
  • Anti-ageing due to the naturally occurring amino acids found in the silk.
  • Made to OEKO-TEX® 100 Certification Standards which means that the material is free from harmful chemicals.

Cons

  • Wash and dry with care.

Washing Guidelines

The manufacturer says that you should wash by hand for the best care, but you can also machine wash if required – use a gentle or special silk detergent in lukewarm water below 30 degrees C.

Hang-dry out of direct sunlight or tumble dry on a cool setting for the minimal amount of time.

Iron on the inside when slightly damp on a cool setting.

Best For Hot and Cold Sleepers

If you’re looking for a silk bed sheet that can help you sleep comfortably year round then I’d say that this is the best silk bed sheet for both hot and cold sleepers.

Because the sheet uses a charmeuse weave and breathable construction to wick away moisture and help you sleep comfortably in different temperatures.

5: Saferay Green – Best Silk Satin Bed Sheet

If you’re looking for a cheaper alternative to pure mulberry silk then going for silk satin is a more affordable alternative that still has many of the same benefits.

Benefits

  • 100% silk satin for better affordability.
  • Breathable with an appropriate weave to help you sleep cool in summer but also warm in winter.
  • Material is wrinkle resistant.
  • Fitted sheets for mattresses up to 12 inches thick.

  • Lacks the refined qualities of pure mulberry silk.

The manufacturer recommends machine washing in cold water and tumble drying on low.

Do not use bleach or fabric softeners.

Best For Affordability

If the other pure mulberry silk bed sheet sets in this list are too expensive for you, then this 100% silk satin alternative is a much more affordable option that still allows you to sleep in breathable sheets that feel luxurious and very soft.

What is a Silk Bed Sheet?

Red silk bed sheet.

Image source: stock photograph used with permission.

A ‘silk bed sheet’ usually refers to a flat sheet that’s used as a top sheet instead of a comforter or duvet, and is either made out of pure silk or a blend of materials.

Silk bed sheets are usually sold online as a 4 piece set that typically comprises of 1 flat sheet, 1 fitted sheet that goes over your mattress to protect it, and 2 pillow cases.

Unless the manufacturer clearly states that the sheets are made from 100% silk, then you are more than likely getting a silk blend that may contain cotton, polyester, or another synthetic substitute that’s designed to feel like silk.

Some of the cheapest ‘silk’ sheets may contain as little as 15% real silk.

Silk blends tend to be cheaper and easier to wash than pure silk sheets but typically don’t feel as soft and may not be as durable depending on the quality of the fabric.

What Are the Different Types of Silk?

When shopping for silk bed sheets, you’re going to come across a range of different ‘types’ of silk.

In many cases, there’s a lack of clarity when it comes to what is actually a type of silk versus a type of weave.

So here’s a breakdown of the main types of silk, silk weaves, and silk alternatives that you’re likely to encounter – along with their distinct qualities.

Mulberry Silk

Mulberry leaves.

When people talk of silk bed sheets and their benefits they’re usually referencing mulberry silk.

Bed sheets made from 100% mulberry silk are the finest quality silk sheets that you can purchase because of their long, smooth, fibers that make the sheets super soft yet very durable and strong.

Natural silk like mulberry is good at regulating your temperature to help you sleep cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

Mulberry silk is also naturally hypoallergenic due to the inclusion of the protein ‘sericin’ – making it an excellent choice if you have allergies, asthma, or sensitive skin.

Mulberry silk sheets are the most expensive due to the laborious and time consuming process that’s required to harvest the silk – which is derived from the cocoons of the Bombyx mori silkworm that’s specifically fed a diet of mulberry leaves.

The downsides to mulberry silk are its higher cost and the extra care that needs to be taken during washing and drying.

Satin Silk

Technically speaking, satin is a type of weave that can use many fibers such as mulberry silk or synthetic alternatives.

If a fabric is formed using filament fibers such as silk, polyester, or nylon the fabric is a ‘satin’ but if the fabric is formed from a short-staple yarn like cotton then it’s considered to be a ‘sateen’ [1].

But often, many people will use the term ‘satin silk’ to mean a type of synthetic silk that’s designed to feel like real silk but is much cheaper.

Synthetic satin can feel soft, but tends to feel slippery and typically lacks the finer qualities of real silk.

If you’re only interested in satin bed sheets, then check out my list of the best satin bed sheets to buy online now.

Tussah Silk

Tussah is a type of wild silk that’s derived from the tussah silkworms and is typically stronger and more durable than mulberry silk.

Charmeuse Silk

Charmeuse silk is actually a type of weave that’s used to create the sheet – where the silk used could be pure silk or a blend of fabrics.

If you go for a sheet with a charmeuse weave, then you can expect the outer facing side of the sheet to have a glossy surface, whilst the inner surface has a dull finish, and the sheet will have some natural elasticity to it.

Due to this uneven design, this kind of weave is more commonly used in products that only showcase the glossy surface – such as pillow cases and duvet covers.

Silk charmeuse is more expensive and requires more careful washing and care than polyester charmeuse but it’s also softer and a better insulator.

Habotai Silk

Habotai silk – also called China silk – is a plain weave fabric that’s soft, lightweight, and has a lustrous finish that’s typically less likely to snag than other types of silk such as satin.

Habotai silk is less durable than charmeuse silk because the material is usually washed with sand to increase softness which also damages the silk.

Habotai silk is commonly used to line sleeping bags and garments.

Dupioni Silk

Dupioni silk is a plain weave fabric with a highly lustrous surface that’s also very strong but can also feel quite rough and stiff.

This type of silk is often used for decorative pillow shams or duvet covers rather than bed sheets due to the coarse texture.

What is a Momme?

The momme is a number that refers to the weight of the silk – such as 22.

Higher momme ratings generally correspond to a better quality silk sheet due to the plumper, denser threads.

What Makes a High Quality Silk Bed Sheet?

So what exactly should you be looking for when you’re shopping for the best quality silk bed sheet?

Here’s a breakdown of what really matters.

i) Go For 100% Mulberry Silk

Mulberry silk is the best quality silk that you can buy because it’s very soft, durable, strong, and good at regulating your temperature.

Plus, you’ll get the extra benefits of the hypoallergenic and anti-ageing qualities because the silk is natural.

ii) Choose a Higher Momme Weight

To ensure that you’re getting a durable silk bed sheet, it’s best to go for a momme weight in the 19-25 range.

iii) Select a Charmeuse Weave

Look for a charmeuse weave because it results in a lightweight and smooth material that has a luxurious sheen.

Silk Bed Sheet Benefits

So what exactly are the benefits of silk bed sheets?

Well, assuming that you go for mulberry silk with a momme weight of 19-25 and a charmeuse weave, then you can expect the following benefits from your sheet.

  • Is strong and durable.
  • Can regulate your temperature.
  • Is super-soft and can therefore reduce skin irritation.
  • Good for reducing allergic reactions because the sheets are naturally hypoallergenic and the surface of the sheets are not easily penetrated by dust mites, pollen, mold, and other allergens that can cause flare ups.
  • Has a luxurious sheen.
  • Holds its colour well and doesn’t fade easily with washing.
  • Has anti-ageing properties due to the material’s ability to help your skin retain moisture and the inclusion of amino acids.
  • Doesn’t shrink when cared for correctly.
  • Can help you sleep warm in winter and cool in summer.
  • Is able to wick away moisture to help you sleep dry.

Silk Bed Sheet Drawbacks

Here are some things to keep in mind when shopping for mulberry silk bed sheets with a momme weight of 19-25 and a charmeuse weave.

  • Typically very expensive – synthetic silk sheets can be much cheaper but may not have the same level of quality.
  • Hand washing and hang-drying is recommended to avoid damaging the fibers – although some manufacturers may say that you can machine wash their silk sheets on very specific settings.
  • May fade in direct sunlight if continually exposed.
  • Tightly woven silk sheets can trap heat and cause you to warm up; which might be desirable in winter but not so much in summer – look for silk sheets that are designed to regulate your temperature as a year-round solution.

Are Silk Bed Sheets Warming or Cooling?

Silk bed sheets can be both warming and cooling.

Because 100% mulberry silk sheets regulate your temperature naturally by being breathable yet also capable of trapping heat.

This means that pure silk sheets can be both warming and cooling in response to your body temperature fluctuating.

However, you can expect your silk bed sheets to predominantly warm you up if they have a very tight weave and/or are made from a blend of synthetic fibers – despite being initially cool to the touch [2].*

Can Silk Bed Sheets be Used in Summer and Winter?

Yes.

You can use mulberry silk bed sheets in both summer and winter because the fabric is naturally breathable.

But as I just said, make sure that the weave isn’t too tight and watch out for synthetic silk blends since they tend to trap heat more readily and could cause you to sleep too warm in the summer.

Are Silk Bed Sheets Good for Allergies?

100% mulberry silk bed sheets are good if you have allergies because the silk is naturally hypoallergenic; meaning that you’re less likely to react to the material – useful if you have eczema or sensitive skin.

Furthermore, silk sheets tend to be more resistant to ambient allergens; meaning that allergens like dust mites, pollen, and pet dander are less likely to penetrate the sheet and cause allergic reactions.

What Are OEKO-TEX® Standard Silk Sheets?

Silk bed sheets made to OEKO-TEX® 100 Certification Standards have been tested to ensure that they do not contain any harmful chemicals.

Are Silk Bed Sheets Really Anti-Ageing?

Apparently so.

100% mulberry silk bed sheets contain a protein called sericin that’s created by the Bombyx mori silkworm and contains 18 different amino acids which can help your skin to retain moisture and thus supposedly have anti-ageing and anti-wrinkling properties [3].

Does Colour Matter?

It can.

Beyond aesthetics, you might want to choose a darker colour to guard against yellowing – whilst a white silk bed sheet might be more cooling if your bed is in direct sunlight because white reflects the most amount of wavelengths.

Will Silk Bed Sheets Shrink?

High quality silk bed sheets shouldn’t shrink if you wash and care for them properly – as described in the next few sections.

How Do You Wash Silk Bed Sheets?

In all cases, you should follow the manufacturer’s guidelines found on the label when washing your silk bed sheets.

But generally speaking, although silk sheets do require more care than other types of bed linens, they’re not the absolute nightmare that many think they are.

Usually, it’s best to hand wash your silk sheets in cold or lukewarm water for the first few times to protect the sheen and soften the fibers – using a detergent specially formulated for silk.

If the manufacturer allows it, you can then move up to machine washing your silk bed sheets on a delicate cycle at a temperature of no more than 86 degrees Fahrenheit – making sure that you wash them alone without any other materials.

Do not soak your sheets before washing because this can cause the fibers to lose their shape – leading to a loss of softness and possible shrinkage.

Always hang-dry your silk sheets out of direct sunlight to avoid damaging the fibers with UV rays.

In many cases, ironing isn’t necessary; but a cool iron on the reverse side (not the shiny side) can help your sheets look extra crisp.

How Long Do Silk Sheets Last?

You can expect your silk bed sheets to last around at least 1-3 years on average – but some manufacturers claim that their sheets can last up to 10 years or more.

However, this will vary depending on if you go for pure silk, synthetic silk, or a blend – plus the level of care that you treat your sheets with when washing, drying, and avoiding stains.

How Can You Maintain Silk Bed Sheets?

In addition to washing your sheets in line with the manufacturer’s guidelines, here’s a few more things that you can do to increase the lifespan of your silk bed sheets:

  • Don’t pre-soak the sheets – this can damage the fibers.
  • Hand wash your silk sheets for the first few times to soften the fibers.
  • Only machine wash if the label allows you to.
  • Use silk-friendly detergents.
  • Hang-dry out of direct sunlight to avoid damaging the fibers.
  • Use cold or lukewarm water for washing.

Do You Need a Deep Pocket Fitted Sheet?

If you’re buying your silk bed sheet as part of a set – then you’ll more than likely be getting a fitted sheet too.

Fitted sheets are designed to cover your mattress snugly – they are kept in place with an elasticated hem that’s tucked under the corners of the mattress.

If your mattress is more than 14 inches thick, then you’ll need a deep pocket fitted sheet to ensure that it will fit over your mattress.

Check out the appropriately titled section ‘what are the different bed sheet sizes’ in my list of the best bed sheets to buy online for the exact dimensions for fitted sheets and flat sheets relative to the standard US mattress dimensions for more help.

What Are Bed Sheet Sleep Trials?

In some cases, you may be able to buy a silk bed sheet set that comes with a sleep trial – allowing you to try the sheets out for a certain number of nights risk free.

In any case, make sure to check the terms of the return policy.
