Layla Sleep Hybrid Foam Mattress Review – Flippable Comfort!

The Layla hybrid mattress stands out because it’s a double-sided mattress that can be flipped over to provide either softer pressure relief or firmer support.

Which sounds great.

But is this mattress right for your dominant sleeping position, body weight, body type, and other sleeping requirements – such as regulating your temperature and guarding against allergies?

That’s what I’ll be helping you to find out in my super-thorough Layla Sleep hybrid foam mattress review.

Layla Sleep Hybrid Foam Mattress Review

My Layla mattress review below is pretty detailed.

So if you’re in a rush, allow me to summarise my findings for you real quick.

Basically, the double sided nature of this mattress opens it up to a massive range of sleeping positions and body weight ranges that’s going to suit both single sleepers and couples alike.

More specifically, the softer side is able to provide exceptional ergonomic pressure relief that will suit lighter-weighted side, front, and back sleepers perfectly.

Whilst the firmer side provides the increased surface tension and support needed to accommodate heavier-weighted sleepers.

The only thing to watch out for in my opinion is if you sleep as a couple and one of you wants the soft side whilst the other needs the firm side!

Otherwise, I’d say that there’s a super high chance that you’re going to absolutely LOVE the Layla hybrid mattress.

Layla Hybrid Design Analysis

The Layla Sleep hybrid foam mattress is 13 inches thick and is comprised of both foam and coils.

But unlike many of the other hybrid mattresses on the market, the Layla hybrid is doubled-sided – with one side providing a soft, plush feel whilst the other is firmer and more supportive.

This means that the soft side and the firm side are layered slightly differently in order to create a different feel and accommodate a wider range of sleeping styles and preferences.

Here’s a more specific breakdown of each layer of the Layla hybrid and what it means for you.

1) Cover

With this being a double-sided mattress, there are technically TWO covers on either side of the mattress.

The cover is made from 66% polyester, 30% viscose, and 4% poly lycra which results in a stretchy, breathable feel.

The cover is removable to make cleaning easier and the integrated handles on the side of the mattress make flipping it over a less arduous task.

2) Comfort Layer

The comfort layer is where things get interesting.

Because there are actually two comfort layers at opposing sides of the mattress.

And if you’ve opted for the softer side then beneath the cover, you’ll be met with 2.5 inches of copper infused gel memory foam that can dissipate your body heat to keep you cool, whilst also providing variable support for greater pressure relief on your shoulders.

Coming from the firmer side, you get all of the same qualities except the memory foam layer is just 1 inch thick for a firmer feel.

3) Support Core

The support core begins on the soft side with 2 inches of Max Airflow Support Foam that uses deeper channelling for enhanced cooling whilst also providing customised layers of support for your hips and lower back through ergonomically adaptive foam.

This transition layer is mirrored on the firmer side of the Layla hybrid but is 1.5 inches thick instead of 2.

Now, regardless of which side you are sleeping on, everything comes to a head in the centre of the mattress – where you’ll find the Infinity Edge™ Individually Wrapped Coil System.

This primary support core leverages 6 inches of individually wrapped 14 gauge springs to provide contoured support for your spine and joints – whilst the edges use a double row of 16 gauge coils for reinforced support.

Layla Hybrid Performance Analysis

The stand-out feature of the Layla hybrid is its double-sided design that allows for a ‘softer’ or ‘firmer’ feel in order to accommodate a wider range of sleeping positions, styles, and body weights.

This is enhanced by the zoned support system that allows for softer cushioning around your head, neck, and shoulders – whilst the firmer regions ergonomically adjust to provide customised support for your hips and back to guard against pain.

More details below.

1) Firmness

The Layla hybrid is a dual-firmness mattress.

More specifically, I personally think that the ‘soft’ side has a ‘medium-soft’ feel – whilst the ‘firm’ side has a ‘medium-firm’ feel.

Now, the firmness and feel of the Layla hybrid will vary from person-to-person depending on your exact body weight, body type, and dominant sleeping position.

But as a general guideline, if you’re 130 lbs -230 lbs and lie on the ‘firm’ side of the mattress on your back – you’ll find yourself sinking comfortably into the top layer before experiencing a degree of surface tension that stops you sinking too far into the materials.

Conversely on the ‘soft’ side, you’ll experience a more enveloping feel due to the memory foam layer allowing for greater sinkage – but there will still be some ‘push back’ to provide resistance and support for your spine and joints.

I’ll go into more detail regarding how different body weights and sleeping positions are likely to feel in terms of comfort in the next section of this review.

2) Pressure Relief

Do you know what pressure relief is?

The pressure relief of a mattress refers to how well it removes discomfort from the more angular areas of your body such as your hips, shoulders, knees, and elbows.

The pressure relieving qualities of a mattress are influenced by the firmness and the properties of the comfort layers.

And overall, I would say that the pressure relief provided by the Layla hybrid is very good.

More specifically, the soft side of the mattress provides the greatest amount of pressure relief because the 2.5 inch comfort layer is made from memory foam – which conforms to your exact body shape by taking your body heat and using it to reconfigure the molecules of the foam – contrasting with the firmer side that contains just 1 inch of the same type of memory foam for less pressure relief.

But regardless of which side you choose, you’ll be able to benefit from the variable support and deeper compression areas that allow for lateral pressure relief.

This means that more tension will be relieved around the most prominent areas of your body like your shoulders – whilst your hips will receive more support to stop them from dropping out of alignment and thus guard against back pain.

I have seen similar zoned pressure relief in other leading edge mattresses like the Casper Hybrid but this highly regarded feature is typically absent from the slew of cheaper hybrid beds that litter the online mattress market in my experience so far.

3) Support

Let’s talk about support.

The level of support provided by a mattress primarily dictates how far you will sink into the mattress and consequently how well your spine and joints are supported – as well as interacting with the upper comfort layers to influence the overall feel and firmness of the mattress.

And it’s my opinion that the support provided by the Layla hybrid is very, very good.

Because at its core, the Layla uses a 6 inch layer of 14 gauge coils to provide contoured support for your spine that’s further enhanced by the transition layers that provide zoned support for more buoyancy around your hips to stop them sinking too far into the mattress – which may otherwise lead to back ache.

4) Moving Around

Moving around in the Layla hybrid should be quite easy if you weigh below 230 lbs because the spring support core provides enough resistance to guard against excessive sinkage.

But if you’re on the heavier side then you might want to use the firmer side of the mattress to provide more surface tension to make transitioning between sleeping positions easier.

5) Noise

Overall, the Layla hybrid is fairly quiet under light to moderate movement because the individually wrapped coils help to absorb motion transfer.

But if you are having problems with noise, then be sure to check that your frame is compatible and correctly assembled – since most unwanted sounds usually come from the base and not the mattress.

6) Maximum Weight Capacity

The maximum weight capacity for the Layla hybrid isn’t clear.

But with this being of a hybrid construction I would expect the single sleeper sizes to hold at least 250 lbs and the double sleeper sizes to be able to hold at least 500 lbs in collective weight.

7) Couples

The Layla hybrid is a good bed if you sleep as a couple because the strong support core makes it less likely to sink excessively in response to the greater weight when compared to an all-foam mattress.

And the coils are fairly quiet and absorb cross motion transfer well which means that co-sleepers are unlikely to wake each other up as you toss and turn during the night.

The only thing to watch out for is ensuring that you’re each happy with either a medium-soft feel or a medium-firm feel because you can’t have both at the same time.

The easiest way to figure this out is by checking the upcoming comfort analysis section to find out the best sleeping positions and weights for each side and then check that you’re both compatible.

8) Edge Support

The Layla hybrid comes with reinforced edges to guard against roll-off and make getting in and out of bed easier – whilst also allowing both single sleepers and couples alike to be able to make full use of the mattress area.

Now, I’m not sure if this is a mistake in the product specification listing, but Layla say that the support coils in the edge are 16 gauge whilst the centre coils are 14 gauge.

Really, this should be the other way around since 14 gauge coils are firmer and so it would make more sense to have these in the edge to provide better support.

9) Allergies

If you have sensitive skin then the included CertiPUR-US® certified foams may help because they are tested to ensure that harmful chemicals like formaldehyde are absent [1] – which means that they may be less likely to irritate your skin.

10) Temperature Regulation

The Layla hybrid is a good choice if you are a hot sleeper because the copper infusion helps to dissipate heat whilst the low density foam and aerated coil core work together to encourage air flow to help you sleep cool.

These cooling features make the Layla a better choice over most other memory foam containing hybrid mattresses and all-foam mattresses because some manufacturers do not take steps to combat the heat retaining properties of memory foam which can lead to a hot and uncomfortable experience.

However, if overheating is still a concern for you then I would use the firmer side of the Layla hybrid if it suits you because the thinner memory foam layer will lead to less heat retention when compared with the thicker soft side.

11) Keeping You Dry

The areated design also has a carry over effect in helping you to stay dry too.

But if you sweat excessively then I would play it safe and leverage the moisture wicking properties of a bamboo sheet set so that you can remain dry and comfortable.

12) Odour

Memory foam tends to produce a distinctive ‘off gassing’ chemical smell but because the Layla hybrid uses lower density memory foam this should be minimal – especially since the CertiPUR-US® certification demands a low VOC count (minimising the primary offending particles).

Beyond this, the infused copper helps to form an antimicrobial barrier that can help to inhibit the growth of odour causing bacteria for a more hygenic and whiff-free mattress.

13) Pain Management

The zoned support and pressure relief may be able to help you manage muscle and joint pain.

More specifically, if you have back problems then the firmer side may suit you better if you’re a front or back sleeper because the increased surface tension should work with the support core to help keep your spine well aligned.

Conversely, you may prefer the enhanced pressure relieving qualities of the softer side if you’re a side sleeper because it can remove the discomfort on the more prominent areas of your body like your shoulders.

14) Cleaning and Maintenance

The cover is removable but it’s not recommended that you hand or machine wash it – dry cleaning is the suggested method by Layla.

If this sounds like a pain then make sure you’re using a high quality fitted sheet to help protect your mattress from spills and stains.

15) Price v Value

Although the Layla hybrid may be a bit more expensive when compared to budget hybrid beds, I think that it still offers a lot of value – especially in light of the zoned support and pressure relief that you’ll struggle to find in cheaper models.

Layla Hybrid Comfort Analysis

How the firmness and support of a mattress interact with your primary sleeping position, body weight, and body type are the overriding factors when it comes to gauging the comfort potential of any mattress.

To sum it up, the softer side is better for lighter weighted sleepers because the better pressure relief combats your natural tendency to sit ‘on’ the materials – which would otherwise result in the mattress feeling too firm.

The softer side is also better if you’re of a slighter or ‘bony’ body type because it will remove the discomfort from your more prominent joints as they interact with the materials.

Conversely, the firmer side is better for heavier sleepers because it provides more surface tension to stop you from sinking too far into the materials.

The firmer side will also be better tolerated by average, athletic, and softer body types due to the greater amount of tissue and ‘padding’ around your joints which naturally removes some of the pressure.

More details below.

1) Front Sleepers

If you’re a front sleeper in the 100 lbs – 130 lbs range then the softer side should provide enough pressure relief to help you remain comfortable whilst the support and transition layers work to keep your spine correctly aligned to ward off back pain.

However, I would recommend going for the firmer side if you’re a front sleeper in the 130 lbs – 230 lbs range because you’ll want more surface tension to keep your hips in a good position.

2) Back Sleepers

Similarly, I would recommend the softer side of the Layla hybrid if you’re a back sleeper between 100 lbs and 130 lbs – with the firmer side being suitable for back sleeping in the 130 lbs – 250 lbs range in my opinion.

3) Side Sleepers

Side sleeping increases the pressure on your shoulders.

So I would estimate that the softer side should be suitable for side sleeping in the 100 lbs – 150 lbs range.

And the firmer side should be ok for side sleeping in the 150 lbs – 230 lbs range.

4) Combo Sleepers

If you’re a combination sleeper that switches positions often during the night then I would say that the firmer side should be better for you in terms of mobility as long as you’re below 230 lbs.

5) Edge Sleepers

The reinforced edges make the Layla hybrid a good choice if you’re an edge sleeper because the chance of roll-off is reduced.

How Do You Set Up the Layla Hybrid Mattress?

Your Layla hybrid mattress will arrive at your door in a compressed box that weighs between 71 lbs (twin) and 144 lbs (California king) – so you might need a few people to help you move the mattress to your sleeping space.

Here you can unpackage the mattress and allow it to expand to its full size on your bed frame – this should take between 2 and 24 hours.

I would recommend keeping your windows open for the duration of the decompression process to allow any odors to dissipate more quickly.

What Are the Compatible Frames?

You can use your Layla hybrid mattress with most frames including platform, slatted, and even adjustable frames.

Slatted bases should have slats that are no more than 3 inches apart to ensure that enough support is provided.

A box spring should be ok – as long as it’s not worn or sagging.

Also, it’s been my experience that if you place a mattress like the Layla hybrid on the floor then it will increase the firmness overall.

How Durable is the Layla Hybrid Mattress?

With this being a hybrid bed I would expect this mattress to last somewhere in the region of 6-8 years with the right care.

The memory foam is lower density which decreases durability as a rule, but the higher density transition foams and pocket coils should offset this to give a fair amount of durability overall.

Will This Mattress Sag?

I don’t think that the Layla hybrid will sag prematurely – although the lower density memory foam does increase the risk of indentations.

So to reduce the chance of this happening as the memory foam begins to soften, I would recommend rotating your mattress once every three months.

This is especially important if you sleep as a couple where one person is much heavier than the other in order to distribute the cumulative load more evenly to guard against sagging, deeper impressions, and the formation of dips and peaks.

Can You Flip This Mattress?

Yes!

Unlike the vast majority of the other hybrid and all-foam mattress on the market, the Layla hybrid has been specifically designed to be double-sided to increase the firmness range and make it suitable for a wider range of sleepers.

Is There a Sleep Trial?

Yes.

Depending on the retail site that you order from and your location, you may be able to avail of Layla’s 120 night money back guarantee.

Is There a Warranty?

Yes.

Your Layla mattress is covered by a 10 year limited warranty that covers things like cracks in the foam, loss of shape, loss of mattress height, and other defects that meet certain parameters.
