I recently decided that a sofa bed would be an ideal addition to my downstairs guest room.
So I decided to take a look on Homary.com to find a sofa bed and review it here because Homary has several country-specific websites that allows them to ship to a range of locations including the US, UK, Canada, and parts of Europe.
In the end, I bought the Homary Modern Black Convertible Sofa Bed.
So is the Homary Modern Black Convertible Sofa Bed any good and who should buy it?
The Homary Modern Black Convertible Sofa Bed is a good quality product that can be used daily for seating and sleeping and has a firm mattress that’s best suited to back sleepers that don’t mind sleeping on a firmer surface – front and side sleepers may need more blankets or a topper for extra comfort.

How to Assemble the Homary Modern Sofa Bed
Assembling the Homary Modern Black Convertible Sofa Bed is fairly simple: slide the shorter base panel underneath the taller base panel and then screw the backrest to the taller base panel to complete the frame – add the sofa/mattress on top.
I can’t say for sure how your sofa bed will arrive, but mine turned up on a pallet with the box contained inside wood slats.
I was able to remove the wood quite easily with a hammer and screwdriver, although I think a crowbar would have worked better.
Once the wood was removed, it was easy to remove the pieces of the sofa bed and take them inside where I could assemble them.
The base of the sofa bed consists of 2 panels that slide over each other to create the base – the panel with the styled edge goes beneath the one with the screw holes where you can attach the backrest.
The lower panel has two extendable hooks attached to it – they are there to stop the bottom panel from over-extending when you pull it out to act as a bed.
Once you have the two base panels set up, you should use the hex key and the 4 screws provided to attach the backrest to the upper base panel – as shown in the picture above.
Once secure, you should check that the bed can be extended and retracted easily before putting the seat/mattress cushion on the frame.
The seat/mattress pad is an unequal thickness on each half so that when it folds out it creates an even surface on the lipped frame – position the pad so that when it folds out, the thicker part rests on the bottom section of the bed frame.
How to Use the Homary Modern Black Convertible Sofa Bed
Once set up, the Homary Modern Convertible Sofa Bed is very easy to use.
From the seated arrangement, all you need to do is pull out the bottom section to create the bed frame and then fold out the seat to create the mattress pad.
The sofa bed comes with 2 yellow pillows that you can use to sleep on if you don’t already have your own.
Below is my assessment of how the Homary Modern Black Convertible Sofa Bed performs in the key areas based on my own personal experience of setting up this sofa bed from scratch:
The most challenging aspect of unpacking this sofa bed was removing the wooden frame that encased the box – but I can’t say for sure that every version of this sofa bed comes in this style of packing.
However, even if it does, you can remove the wood with a hammer and screwdriver or a crowbar.
One other thing to note is that the package was quite large (for the medium version that I received) – it was 60 inches long, 24 inches high, 40 inches across, and weighed 78 kg.
This means that I had to put it in the garage and unpack it there because it wouldn’t fit through my door.
2: Ease of Assembly
The Homary Modern Convertible Sofa Bed was quite easy to set up because it only consists of a few pieces and only 4 screws.
The hardest part was figuring out how the base panels were configurated because the hooks kept catching on the other panel so I thought for a while that I’d put them the wrong way around.
The key is to remember that the taller panel with the screws for the backrest sits on top of the shorter panel with the styled footboard.
I didn’t need any extra tools to complete the assembly – the hex key provided was enough.
3: Assembly Time
Once I’d figured out where the parts went, it only took me a matter of minutes to set the sofa bed up – no more than 15-20 minutes from unpacking to full assembly in my case.
The Homary Modern Convertible Sofa Bed doesn’t come with any instructions.
I think this is because there are so few pieces that the manufacturer thinks that it’s obvious where the pieces go – but I would have appreciated a diagram!
5: Quality of Parts
The Homary Modern Convertible Sofa Bed is of good quality overall and is very sturdy once put together.
My only warning would be to avoid grabbing hold of the wooden panels on the base when you lift the base out of the box because they are tacked down and may come off – handle the frames by the metal parts only.
6: Seating Comfort
In the seated position, I found the Homary Modern Convertible Sofa Bed to be quite comfortable – albeit with a distinctive firm feel.
7: Mattress Comfort
When extended into the bed position, I found the mattress component of the Homary Modern Convertible Sofa Bed to be very firm – this means that I would recommend it for back sleepers that enjoy a firmer surface but not for front or side sleepers that need more cushioning.
I would recommend using blankets or even a soft mattress topper to increase the pressure relief and comfort if you need a more forgiving surface.
The Homary Modern Convertible Sofa Bed is very stylish – it has a black/dark chocolate primary color with gold trim and yellow accent pillows that give it a sleek look that will work well in a range of living rooms, studies, and guest rooms.
- Easy to put together.
- Fast assembly time.
- No extra tools required.
- Comfortable in the sofa position.
- Very firm mattress – more padding required for front and side sleepers.
- May arrive in large wooden frame/pallet.
Who Should Buy the Homary Modern Sofa Bed?
The Homary Modern Sofa Bed is best suited to those who will use it primarily for seating with occasional bed use – unless you really enjoy sleeping on a firmer surface; in which case daily use as a bed may be possible.
