Zinus Spring Mattress Review – Temperature Adaptive Euro Top

In this Zinus spring mattress review, I’ve decided to focus on the Zinus Temperature Adaptive Euro Top mattress.

Because in addition to being marketed as a top cooling mattress, this is also a very popular innerspring mattress that I personally think is more of a hybrid bed because it consists of both foam and spring layers.

So I thought I’d clear up some confusion and find out if this mattress is any good or not.

All of the information below is based on a combination of my own research, personal insights, and resulting opinions.

Which I hope will serve to help you decide if this mattress is right for you or not.

And if it isn’t – then have a look at these high quality mattress alternatives instead.

Zinus Temperature Adaptive Euro Top Review

Are you in a rush for answers?

Then it’s my personal opinion that this 13 inch Zinus Temperature Adaptive Euro Top mattress is best suited to front, back and combo sleepers in the 130 lbs – 200 lbs range due to the great support and pressure relief.

However, I think that side sleepers under 130 lbs may find this mattress to be uncomfortable on their shoulders due to the high density foam that sits very close to the top layer.

Side sleepers in the 130 lbs – 200 lbs range should proceed with caution.

Design Analysis

This is a very well designed bed.

Because this mattress goes way beyond the basic construction of a traditional spring mattress.

More specifically, this is a Euro top mattress which means that the upper most layer that you’ll be sleeping on is made from foam that’s designed to provide firmer edges and more cushioning overall.

And beneath the knitted jacquard cover and microfiber quilted fabric that’s designed to keep you cool and dry, you’ll collectively find 3.75 inches of high density foam, Fusion Gel Memory Foam, and Positive Foam that can contour to your exact body shape for pressure relief and comfort.

The support core consists of 2 inches of high density foam that sits on top of 7.25 inches of individually wrapped 13 gauge iCoils® to help support your spine and absorb the feeling of your bed partner moving around so that you can both sleep undisturbed.

All of the foam used is CertiPUR-US® certified to ensure that the foams are made without harmful chemicals like formaldehyde and meet indoor air quality standards [1].

Performance Analysis

To quickly summarise the key benefits, I would say that the Zinus Temperature Adaptive Euro Top is a firmer mattress with excellent support and pressure relief that could help front and back sleepers manage back and other orthopedic pains.

I think that this is also a decent mattress for sleeping cool whilst also providing good motion isolation to stop your bed partner waking you up as they shuffle around.

See below for more details.

1) Firmness

It’s my personal opinion that this mattress has what I call a ‘cushioned firm‘ level of firmness.

Because whilst the Euro and adaptive foam top layers can provide a ‘soft’ feeling, the inclusion of high density foam just below the quilted fabric makes this mattress feel somewhat firm when you lie on it for an extended period of time.

This means that this mattress is likely going to feel less comfortable for lighter weighted side sleepers – with back and front sleepers conversely feeling more comfortable due to the increased surface tension that works to keep your hips and spine correctly aligned.

I’ll talk more about sleeping position and body weight suitability in the next section.

2) Support

This mattress has some of the best support layers that I’ve seen in a hybrid/innerspring mattress.

Because the support core is primarily made up of individually wrapped iCoils® that adjust one-by-one to your exact shape to provide better support for your spine which is important for guarding against back pain.

Also, the coils are 13 gauge.

This means that the mattress has a bias towards providing fimer support – as opposed to springs with a gauge of 14 and up which have more ‘give’ to them.

3) Pressure Relief

The pressure relieving qualities of this mattress are superior to most normal innerspring mattresses in my opinion.

Because instead of a basic upholstered top layer, the Zinus Temperature Adaptive Euro Top uses foam that contours to your exact body shape by absorbing your body heat and using it to reconfigure the molecules of the foam so that it can change shape.

This makes for a mattress that’s going to have a higher chance of being comfortable for you than a normal spring mattress because it accounts for your exact body shape.

4) Moving Around

If you’re a combo sleeper that changes positions often in the night – or you have mobility problems that makes sitting up in your bed a challenge – then this could be a good mattress for you.

Because despite the cushioned top layers, the high density foam and spring support core combine to guard against excessive sinkage to make moving around and sitting up easier when compared to other types of foam mattresses.

However, if you weigh more than 250 lbs and/or you sleep with a partner then the greater downward force will probably make mobility harder.

5) Maximum Weight Capacity

I don’t know what the maximum weight capacity for this mattress is, but if it’s anything like that of the other Zinus hybrid mattresses that I’ve reviewed then it’s probably going to be in the 500 lbs weight range.

6) Couples

This is a good mattress if you sleep as a couple because the individually wrapped coils make this a very ‘steady’ mattress that shouldn’t shake that much when you move because the shockwaves are dispersed better when compared to a regular spring mattress.

Also, the bias towards firmness through the use of high density foam in the top layers makes this mattress quite resilient to indentations and valleys.

7) Edge Support

This mattress has pretty good edge support thanks to the high density foam, Euro topped stitching, and spring support core.

8) Allergies

I would definitely check out my list of the best hypoallergenic mattresses if you suffer from allergies.

Because although the foams used to make this mattress are less likely to irritate your skin since they are CertiPUR-US® certified and may provide a barrier to things like dust mites, the mattress is not specifically listed as being hypoallergenic.

Furthermore, innerspring and hybrid beds are typically inferior to pure foam mattresses when it comes to guarding against ambient allergens like pollen and limiting dust mite infestations because the spacious coil core can trap these allergens more readily.

9) Temperature Regulation

This mattress has a good to fair chance of helping you sleep cool in my view.

Because the fiber quilted top layer and cooling gel foam sub layers combine to help regulate your temperature.

Plus the coil support core is likely to be better aerated than than a pure foam mattress which can also help to keep you cool.

And the mattress has supposedly been treated with adaptive technology which means that the mattress can apparently regulate your temperature in response to ambient temperature and humidity changes.

However, memory foam does have a reputation for sleeping hot when compared to a traditional upholstered innerspring mattress.

So I would definitely invest in a set of cooling bed sheets if you have hot flashes or naturally tend to sleep warm if you’re going to buy this mattress just to be on the safe side.

10) Keeping You Dry

Whilst the quilted top layer may help to wick away moisture, I would personally buy a bamboo fitted sheet set to help absorb moisture more efficiently if you have night sweats (bamboo sheets also act as cooling sheets too).

11) Odour

I was quite surprised to learn that this mattress is pretty good at smelling fresh right after unboxing overall.

Because these types of compressed mattresses that contain foam typically have an ‘off gassing’ period of a few days where a chemical smell is released into your room as the particles trapped during packaging escape.

But if your mattress does smell a bit after you open it – don’t panic.

Simply open your windows to keep the room well ventilated and the smell should dissipate within a few days.

12) Pain

I think that if you’re a front or back sleeper in the 130 lbs to 200 lbs weight range and you have back pain – or other orthopedic issues – then the pressure relieving qualities of the foam combined with the superior support core may help manage your pain.

However, if you’re a lighter weighted side sleeper then you may find that this mattress increases pain due to its firmness – causing your joints and muscles to compress into each other rather than sinking into the mattress.

This mattress also works with many adjustable bed frames which can further help you if you have mobility issues.

But be sure to speak to your doctor for better advice when purchasing a mattress for your individual medical issues.

Sleeping Position and Weight Analysis

To summarise, I think that the Zinus Temperature Adaptive Euro Top mattress is best suited to front, back, and combo sleepers in the 130 lbs – 200 lbs range.

Side sleepers might be ok, but I would say that if you’re a side sleeper under 130 lbs then this mattress may feel too firm on your shoulders and cause discomfort.

In which case, the Zinus Cloud might be a better option for you.

Here’s a more detailed breakdown of how the various sleeping positions and body weight ranges relate to the qualities and properties of the Zinus Temperature Adaptive Euro Top mattress in my personal opinion.

Front Sleepers

This is likely to be a good mattress for you if you mostly sleep on your front and weigh between 130 lbs and 200 lbs.

Because the high density foam top layers and 13 gauge coiled support core combine to give you the best possible chance of keeping your hips naturally aligned to guard against the back pain that can come when sleeping on your front in a mattress that’s too soft and/or lacks sufficient support.

Back Sleepers

Similarly, the firmness and support combine to make this a great mattress if you sleep mostly on your back and weigh between 130 lbs and 200 lbs.

And to be honest, if you sleep alone, on your back, and weigh up to 250 lbs then I would think that this mattress will be fine for you too.

Side Sleepers

I don’t recommend this mattress for side sleepers under 130 lbs.

Because even with the Euro top and the foam comfort layers, I suspect that the firmness of this mattress will cause discomfort on your shoulders because as a lighter weighted sleeper, you’re more likely to lie ‘on top’ of the materials which naturally increases pressure.

Combo Sleepers

I think that this is a good mattress for you if you weigh between 130 lbs and 200 lbs and switch positions frequently during the night because the firmness creates a surface tension that makes transitioning between positions easier when compared to a pure foam mattress with a plush level of firmness.

Is This Mattress Easy to Set Up?

It should be fairly easy to set up your Zinus Temperature Adaptive Euro Top mattress.

The mattress should arrive at your doorstep in a neatly compressed box that may require two or more people to carry to your room.

You should then unpack your mattress within 72 hours to prevent pressure being applied to the mattress for longer than is necessary – which may hinder its ability to decompress to its maximum volume.

It’s really important that you keep pets and children away from the box when you open it because the mattress has a tendency to roll out quickly and forcefully.

To unpack the mattress, lay the box on its side in your room, slide the mattress out, and use scissors (NOT a knife) to cut away the 1st layer of plastic packaging.

Roll the mattress out on your bed frame and then cut open the clear plastic bag along the edges – this will allow the mattress to decompress.

You should be able to sleep on the mattress the same night, but it may take 48 hours for the mattress to fully expand.

Be sure to keep your room well ventilated to allow the smell to dissipate (which shouldn’t take more than a few days).

Can You Flip This Mattress?

You can’t flip the Zinus Temperature Adaptive Euro Top because the mattress is unilaterally designed so that if you were to turn it over, you would be sleeping on the coiled support core.

Which would feel awful!

Which Base Types Are Compatible With This Mattress?

You should be able to use this mattress on most frame types that are able to accommodate its dimensions – which are 80 x 60 x 13.5 inches.

You can use an adjustable frame too – but it’s advisable to use one that has a lip on the bed frame to prevent the mattress from sliding around.

Can You Return This Mattress?

It depends.

If you buy this mattress directly from the Zinus website then you’ll have 100 nights to sleep on this mattress to test it out (at the time of writing).

If you buy this mattress from a different website then you probably won’t be covered by the same 100 night sleep trial but there may be a different return policy in place that you can avail of.

Is There a Warranty With This Mattress?

At the time of writing, this mattress comes with a 10 year limited warranty.

Does This Mattress Really Regulate Your Temperature?

In my opinion, to some extent yes – the Zinus Temperature Adaptive Euro Top mattress can help to regulate your temperature and may be able to help you sleep cool.

I say this somewhat hesitantly because any mattress that contains memory foam is liable to retain heat and cause you to feel uncomfortable simply because memory foam needs to absorb your body heat for the molecules to reconfigure and allow the foam to change to your body shape.

However, Zinus have taken several precautions to guard against this mattress sleeping hot by infusing it with cooling gel, including a breathable cover, and using adaptive fabric to facilitate moisture evaporation in response to ambient temperature changes.

And the coiled support core should allow air to flow through the bed better than a pure foam mattress might.

So in conclusion, whilst this mattress might not be as breathable as a traditional innerspring mattress with only a thin fabric top layer – it’s probably going to be MUCH better at helping you to sleep cool when compared with many of the other memory foam and even hybrid mattresses currently on the market in my personal opinion.

  • Excellent spring core to support your spine.
  • iCoils® reduce motion transfer to help reduce the feeling of your bed partner moving around.
  • Good pressure relief since the foam top layers mould to your exact body shape to keep you comfortable.
  • May help to guard against back and other orthopedic pains if you’re a front or back sleeper due to the support and foam layers.
  • The firmer feel and spring support core means that moving around and sitting up in the bed should be fairly easy.
  • Good edge support to stop you feeling like you’re rolling out when you get close to the edge of the bed.
  • May help you to sleep cool thanks to the quilted top layer, gel infused foam, and adaptive technology to facilitate moisture evaporation that can help to keep you dry too.

  • The mattress may smell for a few days after opening due to off gassing.
  • Although this mattress is designed to be cooling, memory foam does have a natural tendency to retain heat – which you should keep in mind if you are a very hot sleeper.
